Stamane sveglia tranquilla alle 7:30. Tutti i pellegrini erano già partiti quando siamo andati a fare colazione.

Today we woke up with calm at 7:30. All the pilgrims had already left when we went to have breakfast.

Qualche zaino giaceva solitario all’ingresso dell’hotel, aspettando il taxi che li avrebbe portati alla tappa successiva, mentre i loro proprietari stavano facendo il percorso in “leggerezza”. E sì, c’è anche questo servizio lungo il cammino: la mattina, si può affidare il proprio zaino ad un trasportatore auto-munito che lo porterà all’alloggio di nostra destinazione. È un servizio che fa storcere il naso ai più, compresa chi scrive, ma utile per persone non avvezze ad affrontare certi sforzi.

Some backpacks were laying on the floor, in solitude, at the hotel’s entrance, waiting for a taxi to bring them to the end of their owners’ day route, while their owners were walking the Camino in “lightness”. Yes.. there is also this kind of service. It is a service that turns up one’s nose, including myself, but useful to some, perhaps not used to the kind of effort required by the Camino.

La tappa da O Cádavo a Lugo è molto lunga, per questo abbiamo deciso di dividerla in due parti. La prima, breve, fino a Castroverde, che ci serve per defaticarci; la seconda, normale, di circa 22 chilometri, fino a Lugo.

The route from O Cádavo to Lugo is really long, and because of this we decided to divide it into two. The first, short, until Castroverde, that helps us gather enough energy for the next days; the second, rather normal, of about 22 km, up until Lugo.

La tappa fino a Castroverde si svolge tutta su un comodo e ampio sentiero tra boschi di pini, querce ed eucalipti. Una vera passeggiata di 10 chilometri. Si sale fino all’Alto di Vaqueriza a 835 m. Durante la discesa verso Vilabade a 660 m., incontriamo il santuario di Nuestra Señora del Carmen del XV secolo, purtroppo, oltre che chiusa, è circondata da erbacce e sembra in stato di abbandono, peccato!

The route until Castroverde brought us on a comfortable and spacious path between woods and pine trees, oaks and eucalyptus trees. A proper nice walk of about 10 km. We went up until the Alto de Vaqueriza at 835 meters. During the downhill part towards Vilabade at 660 meters, we came across the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Carmen from the XV Century, unfortunately though, apart from being closed, it is also surrounded by weeds and looks like completely abandoned.. what a pity!

La sorpresa arriva a Vilabade. Si accede al paesino su stradina comoda, in discesa, con belle casette che si affacciano sulla strada, tutte dipinte di bianco e decorate in pietra locale. Improvvisamente si scorge il bel campanile dell’imponente chiesa gotica di Santiago, edificata nel XV secolo dai francescani per assistere i pellegrini di passaggio. Noto subito una signora locale, indaffarata davanti alla chiesa e capisco immediatamente che finalmente avrei visitato la prima chiesa dall’inizio del Cammino. Entro emozionata attraverso il bel portico neoclassico e con grande felicità noto il bellissimo retablo del XVII secolo con Santiago Matamoro. È stato sicuramente il clou della giornata!

The surprise arrives at Vilabade. We entered the village from a nice road, downhill, with nice tiny houses overlooking the road, all painted white and decorated with local stones. All of a sudden we see the beautiful campanile of the beautiful Santiago Gothic church, built in the XV Century by the Franciscans to assist the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. I see a local woman, busy in front of the church and I immediately understand that finally I would have been able to visit the first church since the start of the Camino! I, excitedly, enter by passing a beautiful Neoclassical portico and with much happiness I spot the stunning altarpiece from the XVII Century with Santiago Matamoro. It was for sure the highlight of the day!

Ormai eravamo vicini alla metà del giorno ed entrando nel paese di Castroverde abbiamo subito notato sulla destra, in alto, la sua bella torre, risalente al XIV secolo, sovrastante le rovine del castello di Lemos.

We were, by then, near our final destination of the day, and while entering the town of Castroverde we immediately spotted, on the right, on top, its beautiful tower, from the XIV Century, overlooking the ruins of the Lemos castle.

A passo tranquillo, siamo arrivati alla pensione Residencia Cortés, essenziale, ma pulita. Dopo aver gustato un boccadillo coi calamari, di dimensioni esagerate, abbiamo deciso di riposare per tutto il pomeriggio e recuperare un po’ di energia.

With calm, we arrived at the Residencia Cortés guesthouse, with just the basic necessities, but clean. After having eaten a boccadillo with calamari, of exaggerated dimensions, we decided to rest for the whole afternoon and gather all our energies for the next days.

Tomorrow, we will again wake up at the sunrise.
