Renata goes to Santiago and Rome

Anche questa notte ho dormito come una bambina. Non ci si sorprenda se inizio sempre dando conto di come ho trascorso la notte. L’attività che mi attende ogni giorno, richiede un corpo riposato e che abbia recuperato energie.

Also tonight I slept like a baby. You shouldn’t be surprised that I always start the diary with thoughts on how the night went by. The walking which waits for me everyday, needs a very well rested body that has been able to gather up energies for the next day.

Questo è il motivo per cui cerchiamo di evitare, quando possibile, di alloggiare in ostelli con ospiti professionisti in “concerti notturni”. Si può trascorrere una o due notti in bianco, ma non per un mese intero e facendo di media 25 chilometri a piedi ogni giorno.

This is the reason why we try to avoid, as much as possible, to stay in the hostels with the professional guests in “night concerts”! It is possible to spend one, or two, nights without sleep, but not an entire month making 25km by foot per day.

Ieri pomeriggio, dopo quei 30 e passa chilometri, l’ostello era per me l’ultimo dei desideri, dopo un paio di campanelli suonati a vuoto, ho trovato la sistemazione giusta.

Yesterday afternoon, after the 30km we did, the hostel was last on my wish list. After a few rings here and there, u found the right accommodation.

Eravamo in una casa albergo ben gestita da una gentile, giovane signora galiziana che oltretutto parlava inglese, rarità nelle regioni che ho finora attraversato in Spagna. Grazie signora Natalie!

We stayed in a bed and breakfast well managed by a kind and young Galician lady who also spoke English, a rarity for the regions I have crossed till now in Spain. Thank you Natalie!

Oggi pioggia. Da subito, copertura anti pioggia per lo zaino e mantella per me.

Today, it was raining. From the start of the walk, we had to put the poncho and cover the backpack with its own poncho.

Forse si può pensare che la pioggia possa essere un problema per chi debba camminare, ma non lo è. Sono ben equipaggiata e trovo divertente camminare sotto la pioggia liberamente, senza paura di bagnarmi.

You might think that the rain is a problem for those who have to walk long miles, but actually is not. I am well equipped and I find it fun to walk under the rain, without worries or fear of getting wet.

Un bosco gocciolante di pioggia ha un fascino irresistibile. Le fronde degli alberi appesantite dall’acqua, il concerto delle goccioline di pioggia sulle foglie e nelle pozzanghere, gli animali immobili, quasi volessero farsi accarezzare dal ticchettio della pioggia sul loro corpo. Tutto assume un colore più brillante e l’atmosfera che ci circonda è serena.

The woods under the rain has an enchanting charm. The branches heavy under the weight of the rain, the concert of the rain drops on the leaves and puddles, the still animals, so still that it seems they want to be cuddled by the raindrops falling on their bodies. Everything has a more shiny color and the atmosphere surrounding has gets more serene.

Oggi il percorso si è svolto in gran parte nel bellissimo bosco che conduce al monastero di Samos e da lì a Sarria.

Today the path was for most post in the beautiful woods that brought us to the Monastery of Samos and from there, to Sarria.

The landscape was enchanted. It seemed to be living in a painting of Giovanni Segantini.

La costruzione del monastero risale al VI secolo, ma ha subito diversi incendi e saccheggi nel corso della sua storia. Oggi è un imponente edificio in stile barocco e neoclassico, le cui misure e orpelli quasi stonano con le piccole e semplici chiese romaniche che siamo ormai abituati ad incontrare sul Camino.

The constructions of the Monastery started in the VI century, but it went through a number of fires and looting throughout its history. Today is it a massive building in a Baroque and Neoclassic style and it’s size and decorations do not match with the tiny and simple churches we are now used seeing along the way.

Agostino, il frate addetto alle relazioni coi pellegrini, ci appone il timbro sulla credenziale, ma solo dopo che abbiamo visitato il monastero nei minimi dettagli.

Agostino, the monk responsible for the relations with the pilgrims, gave us the stamp on our credentials, but only after we visited the monastery in every detail.

Terminata la visita, mi aspettava, al bar di fronte al monastero, un meritato boccadillo e un caffè cortado in tazza grande, come chiamano qui il caffè americano.

Once we visited the monastery, waiting for me, in the bar on the other side of the road, a well-deserved boccadillo and a caffè cortado in big cup, that’s how they call here the American coffee.

La camminata di oggi si è conclusa col sole a Sarria senza difficoltà, tra leggeri sali scendi.

Today’s walk ended without difficulties in the sun at Sarria. The path was slightly up and down.

Anche stasera dormirò benissimo, alloggiata in un bell’albergo dotato di tutti i comfort. Grazie all’aria condizionata, tutto il mio bucato quotidiano si è asciugato perfettamente. Spesso succede che i vestiti non asciughino bene e che la mattina seguente si debba metterli nello zaino ancora umidi. Piccole gioie della vita di una “nomade”.

Also tonight I will sleep well in a nice hotel with all necessary comforts. Thanks to the AC, all my laundry dried smoothly. It happens often that the laundry doesn’t dry fast enough and that the following morning we have to put them in the backpack while they are still humid. Today had its small happy happenings in the life of a “nomad” like us.
